ASTRAL
This poem by Helen Cox follows two characters in a transatlantic love affair. Illustration by Charlie Davis
Each night she travels north
the mouth of the Red River calls her
where the Chippewa first snared dreams
woven with willow and horsehair.
The mouth of the Red River calls her,
unravelling Algic scrolls, written in charcoal
woven with willow and horsehair
by bison-soft, primal hands.
Unravelling Algic scrolls, written in charcoal,
she is pointed to a fate faraway
by bison-soft, primal hands,
toward a man with eyes like blue horizons.
She is pointed to a fate faraway
where the Chippewa first snared dreams,
toward a man with eyes like blue horizons,
each night she travels north.
