APP DATING WITH JULIUS CAESAR
What if the Romans had Tinder? Jake Attree’s poem imagines dating apps in another time and finds some uncanny parallels. Illustration by Partners in Crime
Everyone’s the Emperor of Rome
when they’ve got a rectangle
of black glass in their hand,
their thumb throwing fate left and right,
toppling half-naked bodies into invisible piles.
What would Caesar think of sex
at his fingertips like this?
What would he think of the idea
that he and Mark Antony
could sit and push
destiny across glass like gods
push thunder across the sky?
